Erikson's theory
Basic trust vs. mistrust
Age: Birth- 1 year
Conflict: they rely on people to meet their needs
period: they will have warm responsive parents, also believe the world is good, and finally if they wait too long for comfort can cause mistrust and not seeing the world as a good place
Initiative vs. guilt
Age: 3-5 year olds
Conflict: a wide social circle can cause a purposeful behavior
Period: They become more experimental with meeting people and feel ambitious when they feel supported. But also guilt can arise when a child feel irresponsible and feel too anxious
Autonmy vs. shame/doubt
Age: 1-3 year olds
conflict: asserting their independence
Period: this time of a child's life they are gaining trust with many people and asserting their independence. However when someone makes them feel unwelcome they can feel the same/doubt
Identity vs. role confusion
Age: Adolescence meaning 10-20 year olds
Conflict: figuring who you are as a person, meaning their values and vocational goals
Period: a negative outcome can be confusion of what role you play as an adult. However a positive outcome is them finding their identity and being proud of it
generatively vs. stagnation
Age: middle adulthood meaning 40-50 year olds
Conflict: they contribute to the next generation by teaching children or also doing more productive work
Period: These people have seen and learned a lot and have decided to pass on their knowledge but also put their energy into things that are meaningful to them. Stagnation is the feeling of having done nothin to help the next generation
intimacy vs. isolation
Age: early adulthood which means 20-30 year olds
Conflict: forming an intimate and loving relationship with other people
Period: These relationships are mostly formed because of disappointment they have seen in the past. Not only that but also all things they have learned. Furthermore, if they don't find intimacy then isolation will be their result.
industry vs. inferiority
Age: 6-11 year olds
Conflict: They start to master knowledge
Period: Children start to direct their energy toward mastering knowledge and intellectual skills but if theres a negative outcome this can develop a feeling of unproductiveness.
Integrity vs. despair
Age: Late adulthood meaning 60 years to death
Conflict: reviewing their life
Period: A life well spent or they can be dissatisfies with life and fear death
