The Underground Railroad was a code word so it wasn’t underground or a railroad
Started in 1800 and ended in 1865
Slaves were able to escape to freedom
Hide in safe houses (identified by lit lanterns outside)
Was known as the conductor helping enslaved people to freedom
Early life
Grew up in slavery
Her parents were slaves so she was born into slavery
Born in March 1822
Given the nickname Minty
Her slave owners were the Brodess family
Started working at the age of 5 taking care of a baby
Middle life
Freeing slaves
Harriet escaped in 1849 but returned to help free others
She made a total of 19 trips helping slaves escape
She never lost a single "passenger"
She helped over 300 slaves escape
People that looked up to her called her Moses
Late life
After the 19 trips
A total of 100,000 slaves escaped who used the Underground Railroad
Harriet became one of America's first civil rights activists
She still fought for freedom during the Civil War serving as a nurse and spy
She turned her home into a nursing home for sick and elderly past slaves
The 13th amendment ended slavery making it officially illegal
