Ecology
Environment: Sum of all the factors that effect or influence a living thing, ie temperature, light, water, other organisms.
Abiotic Factors
Biotic Factors
Plants
Animals
Physical Environment: The physical surroundings.
Biodiversity: The range of different species that inhabit an area.
Species
The lowest taxonomic rank in which organisms are capable of breeding and producing fertile offspring.
Dominant species: Most common species in an environment.
Ecologist: A scientist who studies ecology
Ecology: Study of the relationships of organisms in their environment.
Ecosystem: A community of organisms interacting with one another and the environment in which they live.
Biosphere: The part of the earth (and its atmosphere) that is inhabited by living things.
Habitat: A place in which an organism lives.
Niche: A particular way of life/function role of an organism in an ecosystem.
Community: A naturally occurring group of organisms living in a common environment.
Stratification: Layering.
Abundance: The total number of organisms in a particular area
Sampling: Ways of estimating populations of species.
Population: The number of species in a particular place at a particular time.
Transects: A profile of part or all of an ecosystem
Quadrats: A square area used for sampling
Capture/Release/Recapture: Method of estimating the population of a species in a particular habitat.
Biomes
Major region of ecological community of plants or animals.
Bioregions: Geographical areas that can be divided up due to their ecological similarities, ie. deserts, forests, oceans.
