Norm-referenced assessments
What is it? – A type of standardized test that compares students’ performances to one another. In a norm-referenced test, test takers cannot “fail,” as each test taker receives a sore that compares the individual to others that have taken the test, usually given as a percentile (a norm-referenced interpretation would mean that, for example, “he scored better than 88% of students in the norm group.”). This is useful when there is a wide range of acceptable scores, and the goal is to find out who performs better.
Example of norm-referenced assessment: the SAT, ACT; IQ tests, and tests that are graded on a curve. For the IQ test, the goal is to rank test takers’ intelligence. The median IQ is set to 100, and all test takers are ranked up and down in comparison to that level.
