Canli- Biological Approach
Background
biological approach
1- One biological assumption is that similarities and differences between people can be understood in terms of biological factors and their interaction with other factors.
2- Another biological assumption is that behaviour, cognition and emotions can be explained in terms of the working of the brain and the effect of hormones.
why was it carried out
To find supporting evidence for the biological approaches assumption that emotions, cognitions and behaviours can be explained in terms of the working of the brain and the effect of hormones.
People are more likely to recall emotional experiences than non-emotional ones.Studies using PET scans and fMRI scans have shown correlations between amygdala activation and the presentation of emotional stimuli.
this could be for 3 reasons
Some people are more responsive to emotional experiences than others
Some people had an enhanced emotional state during scanning
The amygdala is sensitive to the emotional intensity of a stimulus.
Aims
1.To investigate whether an area of the brain called the amygdala is sensitive to different levels of intensity to emotions based on subjective emotional experiences.
To investigate whether the degree of emotional intensity affects the role of the amygdala in aiding memory recall of stimuli classed as being ‘emotional’

method
Lab experiment- The present study used event-related fMRI with a repeated measures design
All 10 participants saw all 96 pictures, so the design is repeated measures.

variables
IV - intensity ratings of each stimulus (picture) on the 4 point scale from 0= not emotionally intense to 3 = extremely emotionally intense.
DV - The self report percentages of forgotten, familiar and remembered with certainty; functional images of 11 frames per trial resulting in a pixel count.
