Credibility
- Science databases provide the an important source for peer-reviewed articles.
- Distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary source. Credibility of each source diminishes; however, all can serve as strong sources of information.
- Select sources with the most current information unless searching for origin information on the topic.
Citations
- Citations are necessary when using any information that is not common knowledge.
- Learn the specific rules for each citation style.
- Direct quotations are rarely used; instead, paraphrasing is used in combination with in-text citations.
- Keep track of references throughout the search. Some programs like Zotero can help with reference compilation.
How to search
- Use search terms appropriate to the topic being researched.
- Boolean operators can be used to refine or broaden search parameters.
