Hitler's rise to power
Although Hitler did not beat Hindenburg in the 1932 election for president, he did get 36% of the vote and became an even more popular figure in Germany

Called new elections in November, 1932 because he was hoping Nazi support would fall and he would be able to maintain control of the government

After Bruning's resignation, Von Shleicher recommended Franz Von Papen
His time as chancellor was doomed to fail in December 1932 as he had no majority in the Reichstag and no support with the public
Involvement of President Hindenburg
Hindenburg did not want Hitler to be Chancellor, he did not trust him
Hitler becomes Chancellor in 1933
Von Papen and Hindenburg's decision to make Hitler Chancellor in January 1933 was because they wanted to use the public support Hitler had gathered but do all of the governing themselves, they underestimated him
Reichstag Fire
27th February, 1933
A young communist called Marinus Van Der Lubbe was blamed
The Nazis used the fire as an excuse to attack the communists- 4000 communists were arrested on the night of the fire and he also persuaded Hindenburg to declare a state of emergency which allowed him to govern Germany with decgrees with Hindenburg's support. He also persuaded Hindenburg to call for an election for March 1933 in the hope that Nazis would gain more support.

Goering claimed Rohm had been conspiring a 'second revolution' and plotting against Hitler
Restructuring of power
Hitler banned all Trade Unions in May 1933, which he believed would help him control the influence of communists among the workers
Hitler ban political parties in July 1933, this removed all political challenges tot the Nazis
Hitler reorganised Local government on Janurary 1934, meaning his central government controlled all of Germany without Local competition
