ATHENS AND DEMOCRACY
Athens was the most prosperous city in Hellas during the Classical Period. In particular, its naval superiority helped develop maritime trade.
Athenian democracy was based on submission to the law and on the political rights of citizens as the result of the collective work of the Athenian people and of people like Pericles.
A minority of Athenians were considered citizens, with political rights and duties. Foreigners, slaves and women were excluded.
THE MEDICAL WARS
First war: 490 BC, Second: between 480 BC and 479 BC.
Greek cities united to resist the attack by the Persian Empire. This allowed them to confirm the common values of the Greeks.
