Tuberculosis (TB)
Infectious and highly contagious, associated with poverty and overcrowded living conditions.
Present in all regions, in 2013, there were almost 9 million cases and 1.5 million deaths.
High mortality rates but 95% of deaths in LIDCs. Mortality rates highest in Cambodia, Myanmar and Afghanistan.
HIV/AIDS
Infectious and contagious, spread bu human bodily fluids e.g. blood, semen.
Main concentration of infection is in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2015, 35 million people were infected worldwide.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
Major cause of death in ageing populations in high income countries - highest in Russia and the Arabian peninsula.
Covers a range of illnesses e.g. coronary heart disease, strokes, hypertension and angina.
Linked to lifestyle e.g. alcohol and tobacco consumption, unhealthy diets and lack of exercise.
Responsible for 17 million deaths per year - 80% in middle / low income countries.
Diabetes
Widespread globally but most present in North America and east and south Asia.
Affects around 250 million people, responsible for around 4 million deaths per year.
Non-communicable disease caused by an insulin deficiency.
Malaria
Found in tropical areas like Central Africa but eliminated in some like north Australia.
Infectious but non-contagious, caused by the anopheles mosquito.
3.2 billion people at risk in 97 countries.
