Nuts and bolts
Nuts and bolts are used to clamp two pieces of material, usually metal, together. They provide a mechanically strong method of joining materials.

used to spread the load and protect the surface when the nut is tightened/

Always screw through the thin piece
and into the thick piece.
Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the core in the thick piece. Use a bradawl in softwood and a drill in hardwoof to make the pilot hole
Drill a clearance hole in the thin piece, slightly larger than the shank of the screws
Countrersink the clearance hole
brass screws shear off: to acoivd this insert a steel screw first, then replace it with a brass one
