Coastal Management in Lyme Regis - Coggle Diagram
Coastal Management in Lyme Regis
Effects of management
Long-term protection against destructive coastal erosion and landslips
More sand and shingle on the beach: better for tourism.
Improvements to roads and better access to public gardens
Conflicts of management
Expensive for such a small community
The protection will only last for approximately 50 years
Management strategy
Protection of sea front and stabilisation of land behind it.
Removal of old wooden groynes, replaced with new, big stone groynes
Built a new sea wall and promenade with rock armour east of the mouth of the river Lim, finished in 1995.
The beach was replenished with sand and shingle to absorb wave energy to protect the sea wall and sea front from erosion.
Rock armour added to the end of the Cobb harbour.
Reasons for management
Landslides
Rapid rates of coastal erosion
The sea erodes the cliffs at the bottom of the land, causing it to become unstable and slip even further
The beach was being eroded away
Buildings and roads become damaged as the land slips towards the sea
