cell division and differention
specialised cells
tissues
xylem
function- transport for water and dissolved ions
adaptations
no top and bottom walls allowing water to flow throuhg
cells are dead, without organelles or cytoplasm to allow free movement of water
outer walls are thickened with a substance called lignin
phloem
function- transport for dissolved sugars and amino acids
adaptations
made of living cells supported by companion cells
cells are joined end to end and contain holes in cell walls (sieve plates)
cells also have few subcellular structures to aid the flow of materials
cells
guard cells
function- control the rate of diffusion of gases within a cell, open and close stomata
adaptations
inner cell walls are thicker then inner allowing the cell to bend when turgin
the cytoplasm has a high density of chloroplasts and mitochondria which are important in the role of opening and closing stomata
palisade cells
function- site of photosynthesis
adaptations
large number of chloroplasts to maximise absorption of light
tall and thin to allow light to penetrate deeper before encountering another cell wall
root hair cells
function - uptake of water and minerals from soil
adaptations
root hair increase surface area so rate of water uptake by osmosis is quicker
thinner walls so short diffusion distance
mitochondria for active transport of mineral ions
