Etiology/Epidemiology

Antigenic DRIFT: mutation of surface antigens, cause of seasonal strains
Antigenic SHIFT: new NA or hemagglutinin acquired via genetic reassortment (sometimes through hosts of other species)

Most common in children and older adults, children carry for longer time
Symptoms
Cough, Sneezing, body aches, head ache, fever
Rhinitis, sore throat, malaise
Nausea, vomiting, otitis media common in children

typically resolve in 3-7 days, cough and malaise may persist for more than 2 weeks
Complications
Bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis

High morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization rates

Others - encephalopathy, transverse myelitis, myositis, myocarditis, pericarditis, and exacerbation of underlying comorbidities

Treatment

Non Pharm
Cough/ throat lozenges, Soup. tea, rest
Transmission
Person-to-person via inhalation of respiratory droplets, which can occur when an infected person coughs or sneezes
Prevention: hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes
