In up to half of uncomplicated infections there may be no obvious physical symptoms or very mild symptoms
To confirm infection of identify causative organism, need to do microbiological analysis of urine sample

Highly specific, positive usually indicates UTI but sensitivity - false negatives

Obtaining urine samples
Most common source is the midstream urine specimen
Alternative is suprapubic aspiration: avoids problems of contamination
