Endocrine
Major Functions of Endocrine System
Made up of: cell, fluids, organs(endocrine glands), secrete hormones
-Works with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis
Major 2 types of Glands
Exocrine: secretes product into dust out of internal environment
Endocrine: secretes hormone into body fluids to affect target cells
Major Endocrine Glands/organs and their Funtions
Adrenal Glands: produce hormones to regulate metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, and respond to stress
Pancreas: sends out hormones that cannot handle sugar in your blood stream
Parathyroid Glands: regulate calcium levels in the blood
Pineal Gland: makes hormone melatonin
Thyroid Gland: regulate bodies metabolism
Reproductive Glands (ovaries&tests): Ovaries make eggs and sex hormones and Tests make sperm and testosterone
Pituitary Gland:controls metabolism, growth, blood pressure
Thymus: producing maturing lymphocytes or immune cells
Kidney: secretes hormones
Compare & Contrast steroids vs nonsteroids & list hormone for each category
Steroids:
Derived from cholesterol
-Lipid soluble (they can pass through cell membrane)
-Inside target cell
-binds with DNA and activates specific genes
Non-Steroids:
Amines,peptides,proteins,or glycoproteins (amino acids)
-With receptors in target cell membrane
-Binding site and activity site are the first messenger
-Second messenger causes change
Homeostasis mechanisms of hormone regulation (neg & pos feedback)
Negative Feedback:
Control Hormone Release
-Hormone level goes up, exerts effect then is inhibited by negative feedback
Diseases associated with endocrine system
Type 1 and 2 Diabetes
Addison's Disease
Crushings syndrome
Graves Disease
Hashimotots Thyroiditis
