Haiti et Côte d'Ivoire - la participation des jeunes dans la vie…
Haiti
et
Côte d'Ivoire
- la participation des jeunes dans la vie politique
In 2011
nearly three quarters of Haitians did not vote
in the presidential/parliamentary elections
Most popular party was
excluded
from the ballot
Also done in April 2009 -
90% of voters did not vote
In 2015 they had to redo parliamentary elections in various districts due to
violence
that occurred during the first round
Tearing up the ballots and the ballot boxes
Elections are
flawed
with many
irregularities
The young people have a negative view of politics -
they don't trust the people that are elected
They prefer to join an NGO rather than a political party
The political system shuns
women
and
young people
The parties are organised to target
men
and the
elderly
July 2021:
Youth Political Leadership Strengthening Project
A pact was signed by several organisations
Encouraging young people of both sexes to take part in political activities
Encouraging the involvement of young people in societal debates
Propose programs, projects etc that will promote the emancipation of young Haitians
Facilitate the recognition and development of youth as a sector in its own right
Ivorian political class is aging
Within the government, out of a staff of 46 ministers and state secretaries, there are only two members under 40 and three under 50 (2020)
The major parties claim to give an important place to the young people within them yet
their perception of young does not align with international ideas
. You can be considered young up to the age of 50
Presidential election does not concern young people - Constitution sets the minimum age of eligibility at 35
The older generation/politicians potentially use this lack of political education to mislead the people
Young people don't take enough initiative?
elections and political life are synonymous with violence
Pessimistic:
only 36% of 18-36 year olds are registered to vote when they represent around 70% of the population
