Brainstem, Caudal medulla, Upper medulla - Coggle Diagram
Brainstem
Medulla = Myelencephalon
- Motor nuclei = medial portions
- Sensory nuclei = lateral portions
Inferior cerebellar peduncle = Imp for transmission of information from the spinal cord and medulla to the cerebellum
- Contains proprioceptive and vestibular fibers which project to the cerebellum
Fasciculus gracilis/cuneatus = Tuberculum
- Mediate conscious proprioception
- Tactile sensation
- Vibration sensation
-
-
-
3 mains functions:
- Cranial nerve function
- Conduit functions
- Integrative functions (reticular formation)
- Nerve connections of the motor and sensory systems pass through the brainstem
Spinothalamic tract (pain, T°, itch, and crude touch)
Dorsal column-medial lemniscus pathway (fine touch, vibration sensation, and proprioception)
-
- Regulation of cardiac and respiratory function
Maintaining consciousness
Sleep cycle
Heart rate
Breathing
Sleeping
Eating
- Main motor and sensory innervation to the face and neck via cranial nerves
