Cotton Cultivation in Greece
Cotton is one of the national products of Greece. It is called "White Gold". 9.8% of the cutivated fields of Greece produce cotton. Greece produces 85% of the total European cotton production.
Environmental problems:
Huge water consumption
In the last three decades, 3 billion cubic meters of water have been pumped from non-renewable reserves.
Soil fertility is declining alarmingly
The fertility of the Thessalian plain, where the largest cotton cultivations can be found, has decreased by up to 50% in the last 30 years, as a result of which the production is affected and acres are abandoned.
