Endocrine System Arianna Reyes P. 1 - Coggle Diagram
Endocrine System Arianna Reyes P. 1
Major Functions
The endocrine system works with the nervous system to integrate the activity of body cells.
Regulations
Growth & development
Maintenance of electrolytes, water, & nutrient balance of blood
Cellular metabolism & energy balance
Mobilization of body defenses
Reproduction
Major Glands & Organs
Exocrine
: Non hormonal substances and contains ducts to carry secretion
Endocrine
: Produces hormones and is ductless
Hypothalamus
Pineal Gland: MEL
Affects the brain.
Parathyroid gland: PTH
Affects bones, intestines, and kidneys
Thymus: Thymosin
Affects white blood cells
Pancreas: WS and GCG
Affects the liver
Ovary: E+P
Affects sex organs (uterus)
Testis: T
Affects sex organs
Adrenal glands: EPI, NEPI, ALDO, and CS
1 & 2: Affects muscles and blood vessels
Affects kidneys
Affects the brain
Thyroid gland: T4 and T3
Affect the entire body
Steroid vs. Non-steroid Hormones
Steroid Hormones
Produced from cholesterol (Lipid soluable)
Non-steroid Hormones
Derrived from amino acids, protein and peptides (Water soluable)
Homeostatic Mechanisms of Hormone Regulation
Blood levels of hormones are controlled by negative feedback systems
The release is triggered by endocrine gland stimuli or nervous system modulation
Disease associated with Endocrine
Diabetes insipidus
ADH deficiency due to damage to the hypothalamus or posterior pituitary
Myxedema
Caused from hyposecretion of TH in adults
Graves' Disease
Autoimmune disease: body makes abnormal antibodies directed against thyroid follicular cells
Cushing's Syndrome
Depresses cartilage/bone formation and immune system which inhibits inflammation, disrupts neural, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal function
Addison's Disease
Deficits in glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, and decreases plasma in glucose and NA+ levels
Diabetes Mellitus
Due to hyposecretion of insulin or hyperactivity of insulin
Hyperinsulim
Excessive insulin secretion
