Sound waves, pitch, loudness - Coggle Diagram
Sound waves
pitch and loudness
high pitch = high frequency
high amplitude = loud
low amplitude = soft
low pitch = low frequency
speed of waves
fastest in solids and slowest in gases
definition
displacement of particles in the medium that forms a series of compressions and rarefactions
compressions
are regions of higher pressure than surrounding particles due to particles being closer together
rarefactions
are regions of lower pressure than the surrounding particles due to particles being closer together
reflected off surfaces to form echos
produced by objects vibrating in a medium
properties
longitudinal wave
requires a medium to propagate though
applications
ultrasound
Ultrasound are frequencies that are higher than 20000Hz which is out of the range for the human ear
maternity checks for the pregnant
methods to determine speed of sound in air
Direct Method
formula: v = s/t
Steps
1) Have 2 people stand at least 500m apart from one another
2) One person fires the gun and the second person starts the stopwatch when he sees the flash.
3) The second person stops the stopwatch when the person hears the sound of the gun.
4) Take the distance between divided by the time shown on the stopwatch to calculate the speed
the distance has to be large enough so that the timing taken will be accurate
Have the two people switch places to make it even more accurate
indirect method
Formula: v= 2xs/t
Calculating echo sound is the indirect way to calculate
pitch
loudness
