Endocrine: Ashley Gonzalez P.1
major functions of the endocrine system
reproduction
growth and development
maintenance of electrolyte, water, and nutrient balance of blood
regulation of cellular metabolism and energy balance
mobilization of body defenses
Major endocrine glands/organs and their functions (separate by region/ body cavity)
pineal gland
secrete melatonin
hypothalamus
secretes 8 hormones
pituitary gland
Growth Hormone(GH)
actions on metabolism and indirect growth
thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)
stimulates development and secretory activity of thyroid
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
stimulates adrenal cortex
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
stimulates production of gametes (sperm/egg)
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
production of gonadal hormones
males:production of testosterone
females: mature egg, ttrigger ovulation, release estrogen and progesterone
Prolactin (PRL)
stimulate milk production in women
thyroid gland
affect every cell
parathyroid(dorsal aspect)
Secreted in response to low blood levels of Ca2+ (PTH)
thymus
adrenal glands
produces +24 hormones called corticosteroids
pancreas
insulin and glucagon, insulin lowers blood glucose levels and glucagon rises the glucose levels
ovary(female gonad)
testis(male gonads)
Compare and contrast steroid vs. non-steroid hormones and list the hormones for each
category
non-steroid have amino acid derivatives, peptides, and proteins unlike steroids are synthesized from cholersterol, gonadal and adrenocortical hormones, lipid-soluble
Homeostatic mechanisms of hormone regulation (negative and positive feedback)
negative feedback controls blood level hormones as well as it increases the hormone effect on the target organs which always them to inhibit faster
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
hyposecretion: symptoms include low metabolic rate, thick and/or dry skin, puffy eyes, feeling
chilled, constipation, edema, mental sluggishness, lethargy and it is when there is lack of iodince within
hypersecretion: have similiar symnptoms which include elevated metabolic rate, sweating, rapid and irregular
heartbeats, nervousness, and weight loss despite adequate food, it is also known as Grave's disease
Cushings disease: depresses the cartialiage and immune system, and inhibit inmflamation, it causes tumors on pituitary, lungs, pancreas, kidney
Addisons disease: involves deficits in glucocortiods and mineralocoroticoids
