- - - - Silent environments are more conducive to deep thinking as you can direct your entire focus onto your thoughts. In noisy environments, your focus subconsciously and consciously becomes directed towards background noises, inevitably making you loose full concentration.
- - - - How would you define freedom of speech and what does it take for someone to have their right to free speech violated?
        
        Freedom of Speech allows a person to state their
        personal beliefs and opinions whether or not it is in alignment with someone else. Once this privilege is taken, the would freedom now becomes restraint. For example, silencing someones voice politically or personally leads to dictatorship and command, which allows for another person to be in control of another persons say in whatever the subject may be. :silhouettes:
      - Can you think of any examples? How do state censorship and "no platforming" differ as means to restrict or infringe someone's freedom of speech?
        
        How might one person's freedom of speech represent a direct, immediate threat to another person's safety such that it needs to be suppressed?
      - While Freedom of Speech can simply be defined as having the ability to say anything one pleases without physical consequence. In order for an individual to have their right to free speech violated, there must be an established presence of censorship or legal action against an individual for saying certain things or speaking on certain topics. One example that helped me gain a deeper understanding of censorship and the understand how the lack of Freedom of Speech impacts a society, is in George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.
- - - - I think that Cage's intention with his piece was an attempt to deviate from the heavy instrumentalised compositions of other composers from the mid 20th century, such as Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Rimsky-Korsakov. His work gives concert-goers a refreshing opportunity to interpret the silence with their own thoughts, instead of merely just appreciating the work of a composer.
    - - I think Cage wants to remind the audience to pay more attention to their surroundings. More broadly, Cage wants the audience to not become apathetic or ignorant to things occurring around them due to their notion that there is "nothing to see / hear." Cage reminds us that the absence of something is just as prominent a message as the inclusion of something.
    - - Yes, we are in a constant state of hearing and thinking at all times. silence doesn't need to be necessarily vocal, but the noise we can create in our head. Whether that's our conscious or thoughts.
      - Silence can be relative. What is considered quiet or silent next to a busy highway could be incredibly loud in a closed pine forest. Some people never experience a true absence of sound, so perhaps silence shouldn't be seen as no sounds. Instead as different sounds, or different intensities of sounds. -Luis (photos taken by me)
      - I agree that there is no such thing as pure silence. Even when you think there is total silence, there is still some external or internal sound.
      - I agree that there is no such thing as silence, there are rather levels to silence. For example, sitting in room alone, taking a walk in the park, or sitting in library. There is never complete silence because I'd say people are always thinking and having thoughts rush through their head.
      - I believe there is no such thing as true silence, given that even in a vacuum (assuming we would be able to breathe), we could still have thoughts in our head. But aside from that literal interpretation of the meaning, I think silence as an action that very much exists. The words, signals, or expressions that could stop a conflict that are not communicated have as much power as the words, signals, or expressions used to start the conflict. How could there be no such thing as silence if silence has been the one of the root causes of oppression throughout the world?
