What Can Be Done to Reduce Climate Change
Leave the car at home.
How It affects us.
Public transit is a sustainable mode choice that not only helps the environment, but also proves to be beneficial for our health. In fact, the American Public Transit Association suggests that the use of public transit saves an estimated 1.4 billion gallons of gas and 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
What can we substitute for driving to work.
Walking.
Carpool for longer trips.
Biking.
Subway/ Streetcar.
Reduce your energy use, and bills.
What can we do to cut back on energy use.
Unplug unused electronics.
Turn off unnecessary lights.
Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth.
Use natural light.
How it affects us.
Reducing your energy usage reduces the demand for fossil fuels and, in turn, lower the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Climate change results in heat waves, drought, higher sea level, abnormal weather patterns and a greater likelihood of natural disasters.
Cut consumption – and waste.
What can we do to cut back on consumption and waste.
Buy things in bulk.
Avoid single use items/foods.
Avoid food wrapped in plastic.
Get your own reusable water bottle.
How it affects us.
Reducing, reusing and recycling can be a key part of a climate change strategy to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. EPA has estimated roughly 42% of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the production and use of goods, including food, products and packaging.
Respect and protect green spaces.
How It affects us.
Green spaces are incredibly important to local life which is why this government is committed to protecting them. These are special areas that invigorate communities like local beauty spots, wildlife habitats or even local playing fields so important for healthy activities.
What can we do to help protect our green spaces.
Enrich your soil with a compost pile.
Plant a tree.
Take care of your grass. Taking care of your own front yard is a good first step toward protecting and maintaining your green space.
Choose flowers and plants that suit your area.
Eat less meat and dairy.
How It affects us.
According to the Environmental Defense Fund, if every American had one meat-free meal per week, it would be the equivalent of taking over 5 million cars off our roads annually. Fortunately, by reducing our meat consumption, we can turn the tide—not to mention improving the lives of billions of animals at factory farms.
What can we do to cut back on meat and dairy.
Consider Plant-Based Meats.
Embrace Nuts and Seeds.
Turn to High-Protein Grains like pasta.
Eat more greens like beans, broccoli.
