Conclusion and VUCA insights
VUCA(Volatile, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity
-
-
• Complexity - would different linguistic groups with different abilities and aspirations be able to co-exist in a cohesive ecosystem such as a regional grouping like Southeast Asia?
Cultural differences and different levels of development across the region continue to prevent the people from feeling a sense of belonging to the broader ASEAN community.
• Ambiguity
-
-
The complexity in the diverse Human Development Index and income distribution across the region have led to a profound sense of ambiguity - would SEA implode?
? can SEA survive as an entity? The “rich” ASEAN members (i.e., Brunei and Singapore), represented in terms of population, have less than 1 percent of the total ASEAN population.
Even though ASEAN initiatives and policies have been implemented to develop chronically poor nations such as Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar , but, as clearly shown by the Human Development Index indicators, and the income distribution (poorest and richest 10 percent), these efforts have not been enough
• Bounded geography, climatic similarities, common ecological features and other observable are not enough to define a political region such as Southeast Asia (given that ASEAN is an official political grouping within the region.)
• We have seen how the Austronesian and Austroasiatic migrations become one of the main VUCA event which affected SEA as a region.
The earliest dominant group of people settled in Southeast Asia and their seafaring and farming abilities transformed the region in a significant way.
