Endocrine system yareli ramirez p2
major functions
the endocrine system works with the nervous system its made up of cells, tissue, and organs, it helps maintain homeostasis. hormones get released into the blood stream and into target cells.
the body has two major types of glands
exocrine secretes products into duct outside the internal environment
encocrine secretes hormones into body fluids to affect target cells.
hormone action
steriods delivered from cholesterol
non steriods peptides proteins produced from amino acids
Anterior pituitary releases and inhibites hormones from the hypothalamus
hormones in the anterior pituitary are the growth hormone stimulates body cells to grow and reproduce .
GHRH increases the amount of growth hormone
GHIH inhibits the affects of the released growth hormone
Posterior pituitary part of the nervous system consist of axons of neurons of the hypothalamus
prolactin promotes milk production
major glands
thyroid gland
regulates calcium with thyroxine (T4) and triiodoththyronine (T3) they both have quite similar actions, regulates metabolism, calatonin lowers blood levels of calcium
thyroid disorders hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
hypothyroidism -under activity of the thyroid gland
hypothyroidism- over activity of the thyroid gland
adrenal gland
mineralocorticoids hormone group that helps regulate sodium and potassium
Aldosterone regulates homeostasis of sodium and potassium ions , helps with blood pressure and blood volume, promotes excretion of hydrogen in the urine,
Cortisol - increases blood glucose levels, helps to maintain blood pressure, immune function and the bodies anti inflammatory process
can also produce male and female hormones for early development
Addison disease hyprosection of glucocorticoids and mineral ocorticoids
cushing syndrome- hypersecretion of adrenal cortical hormones
thymus
secretes thymosins which affect production and differentiation of T lymphocytes which are important to the immunity system. they are largest in children but shrink as you grow
pancreas
stimulates the hormones Glucagon and Insulin, Glucagon and Insulin help maintain levels of glucose.
Glucagon increases blood levels of glucose
Insulin decreases blood levels of glucose
parathyroid gland
parathyroid hormone increases blood calcuim ion concentration and decreases phosphate ion concentration
disorders hypoparathyroidism lack of parathyroid hormone
hyperparathyroidism too much of parathyroid hormone
ovaries
stimulates estrogen and progesterone
pineal gland
stimulates melatonin released at night, helps you sleep
testes
stimulates sperm
hypothalamus
control center makes ADH and oxytocin
