Nathaniel Matulessya Period 2
Endocrine System
Major endocrine glands/organs and their functions (separate by region/ body cavity)
Organs
Thyroid
T3 hormone helps maintain muscle control, brain function and development. And it usually goes for most tissues
T4 hormone is important for you metabolism, mood, and body temperature
Parathyroid
Makes PTH and usually targets the kidney, bones, and intestine. It makes calcium and releases it into the bloodstream taken from the bone.
Thymus
Makes thymosin and it usually affects the immune system
Adrenal
Makes aldosterone, cortisone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
Pancreas
Makes glucagon and insulin
Pineal
Makes melatonin and usually goes for organs in the brain. And it helps your body with circadian rhythms and with sleep
Ovaries
Makes estrogen and progastrin. Estrogen helps control the menstrual cycle and is usually good for childbearing. It usually targets organs in the female reproductive organ.
Testes
Makes testosterone which regulates bone mass, fat, muscle mass, and strength.
Compare and contrast steroid vs. non-steroid hormones and list the hormones for each
category
Steroid
Steroid substances are derived from cholestorl
Steroids are formed from cholesterol
Estrogen,, testosterone, aldosterone, and cortisol
Non-Steroid
Formed from amino acids
Peptides formed from amino acids
Polypeptides and proteins are formed from amino acids
Glycoproteins are formed from protein and carbohydrates
Amines, peptides, proteins, or glycoproteins are all produced from amino acids
Homeostatic mechanisms of hormone regulation (negative and positive feedback)
Negative feedback
The hormone feeds back to decrease its own production to make the body go back to its original state
Positive feedback
It pushed the body to its limits and to extreme measures causing it to keep going
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
Hypothyroidism
Thyroid doesn't create and release enough thyroid hormone into your blood stream.
Hyperthyroidism
Thyroid creates and releases thyroid hormone but your body doesn't recognize it
Major Functions
Makes hormones that control your moods, growth, and development, metabolism, organs, and reproductive organs.
It controls how hormones are released. Sends those hormones into your bloodstream so they can go to the other body parts.
