Endocrine Map - Alyssa Villanueva P7
major functions of the endocrine system
made up of cells, tissues, organs (endocrine glands)
helps maintain homeostasis
2 major glands
exocrine - secretes products into ducts, outside the internal enviroment)
endocrine - secretes hormones into body fluids to affect target cells
Compare and contrast steroid vs. non-steroid hormones
non steroid
combine with receptors in target cell membranes
other proteins are activated and they carry our the affect of the hormone
steroid
protein receptors for steroid hormones are location inside the target cell
can pass by the cell membrane
hormone - receptors complex binds with the dna and activates specific genes
major endocrine glands / organs
pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, reproductive gland,
pancreas, kidneys , thalamus
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
diabetes mellitus
lack of insulin
hyperthyroidism
over activity of the thyroid gland
hypothyroidism
cause low metabolic rate, fatgue and weight fain in adults
Homeostatic mechanisms of hormone regulation
positive feedback
wanting to increase and not go down when a certain hormone is being produced (bad thing)
negative feedback
if there is too much of one hormone it release another to help stabilize it (good thing)
