Concept map 07 Endorcine Jocelyn Escandon 01/18/22 Period 6th
major functions of the endorcine system
Metabolism (the way you break down food and get energy from nutrients)
Growth and development.
Emotions and mood.
Fertility and sexual function.
Sleep
Blood pressure.
Major endocrine glands/organs and their functions
Hypothalamus - produces multiple hormones that control the pituitary gland , regulates te function of other endorcine glands
Pituitry - ;ocated below the hypothalamus. the hormones it produces affect growth and reproduction . can also control other endorcine glands
pineal - found in the middle of the brain . important for your sleep-wake cycles
thyroid - located in the front oart of the neck. important for metabolism.
parathyroid - located in the front of the neck . important for maintaing control of calcium levels in the bones and blood
adrenal - found on top of each kidney . produce hormones important for regulating functions as blood pressure , heart rate , and stress response.
pancreas - the pancreas is located in the abdomen behind the stomach . functions involve- controlling blood sugar levels.
Compare and contrast steroid vs. non-steroid hormones and list the hormones for each
category
Steroids or steroid-like substances, which are derived from
cholesterol
Nonsteroids: amines, peptides, proteins, or glycoproteins,
which are produced from amino acids
non -steroids hormones - proteins , small peptides , and modifiedamino acids
Homeostatic mechanisms of hormone regulation
negative feedback - relase of hormones from the hypothalamus controls
As hormone level rises , the hormone exercts its effect , furthersecretion is inhibited by negative feedback,
Positive feedback is a process in which the end products of an action cause more of that action to occur in a feedback loop.
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
Type 1 Diabetes.
