Reducing Greenhouse Gases Emissions
Green Electricity
Wind
Harnesses the power of the wind to spin turbines. Wind turbines can be privately owned and can generate electricity over land and oceans.
Releases little to no carbon dioxide in the process of generating electricity.
Nuclear
Nuclear energy causes a reaction with uranium, releasing energy. The energy can be used to heat up water or other substances and create steam to spin turbines, and generate power.
Hydroelectric
Uses the river currents, ocean waves and tides to spin turbines and produce electricity. Dams can also be built to help generate electricity.
Transportation
Electric Trains
Runs off of electricity from overhead lines or a battery within the train.
Electric Cars
Eliminates the use of fossil fuels for power, and uses electricity. Runs off of limited battery power, but braking can help recharge the battery.
Using green electricity is key as powering vehicles with electricity generated by fossil fuels defeats the point.
Recycling
Reusing and repurposing plastic, paper, and other materials.
Reduces deforestation for paper
and other wood materials.
Allows for more trees to grow and take
carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Reduces production of new plastics.
The production of new plastics releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when the oil is extracted and when the plastics are made.
Carbon Capture
From factories and power plants
Containing the carbon dioxide instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.
After carbon dioxide is captured, it is compressed and transported to be stored in oil reservoirs or saline aquifers. It is also used to make concrete and synthetic fuels.
From the atmosphere
Collecting carbon dioxide that has been released into the atmosphere.
Agriculture
Meat Consumption
Reducing the amount of meat you eat, especially from cattle, as they release methane and require a lot of food and water to produce.
Food Waste
Limiting the amount of food you waste, and purchasing the right amount of food, so that little is wasted.
Purchasing less food means that less carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere from production and transportation.
Local Foods
Local food products spend less time in transportation compared to imported foods. Local foods can be transported on electric vehicles and don't have to go on planes and ships.
