Materials (applications)
elasticity
a property of solid material to return to its original shape and size after the forces deforming them have been removed.
-
-
strain
-
usually a change in the length of an object, eg. springs
elastic limit
a load that exceeds the elastic limit, and causes permanent deformation
strength
the ability of a material to withhold applied stress or load without causing structural damage or failure
-
plastic deformation
the permanent distortion that occurs when a material is subjected to constant force (exceeds its yield strength)
creep
the tendency of a solid material so move slowly or deform permanently after mechanical stress is added continuously
-
ductility
the capacity of a material to deform permanently (stretch, bend or spread)
-
-
elastic hysteresis
the difference between the strain energy required to generate a given stress in a material and the materials elastic energy at the stress
