Orientalism-> Gallinard doesn't really care about Song as a person; rather just cares about her "exotic" identity and what she represents for him; colonizing framework & an imagined identity
Song in't acting like an actual person when speaking to Gallinard. She just tells him what he wants to hear to make him happy and he doesn't even notice
Act III: "international rape mentality" that the West has towards the East; "The West believes the east, deep down, wants to be dominated– because a woman can’t think for herself"
Song finds her power through her sexuality and the hypersexualization framework; connects to "Hypersexuality of Race" because to redefine she also must be bound and conform to the framework that's already there for her
Fantasy vs. Reality
Gallimard clings to the fantasy he has about the Orient and about Song and he would rather die than let go of it
Power & Control
Gallimard feels as though he has control over Song for the majority of the play; she's his "lotus blossom"
revealed in the end that he was never really the one in power, a reversal of the power dynamic

Ah Kee is the one who shoots and kills Fu Manchu; he dresses in suits and uses "white violence"-> a surrogate white character who's asked to choose between the East and West; by killing Ling Moy in the end he's choosing the West, proved his loyalty

China as an "other"
Fu Manchu's form of violence is mind control (white violence is aggression and guns), defies laws of natural world (by using mind control, seemingly coming back from the dead)-> inscrutability of the Asian psyche like in "The Unparalleled Invasion"
Fu Manchu is an almost mythical villain who embodies the "Sleeping Dragon" stereotype of China; disappears for 20 years but is always a looming threat over the West

conversation between person seeking "Lady" and the responder; Double standard: person pursuing the woman is free to do so (format), speaker who responds to fantasy is contained to standard scripts/lines
