The Causes and Effect of the Haitian Revolution
Cause: Civil War between the two classes of white men in St. Domingue in which slaves were used as soldiers for both sides
Slaves use skills acquired from war. Perhaps Toussaint, who was said to not learn any soldier/gerneral skills until he was 50, learned from the amount of civil war battles he had to fight in.
Effect: Rulers and governors become wary of uprisings/insurrections/revolutions
Cause: Realization of Double Standards from the French Revolution to the current state of St. Domingue
Slaves find about different countries and France freeing slaves. Gives them motivation and reason to ask for their own freedom, too.
Slavery was looked down upon and gradually reduced in Europe, including the mother country, FRANCE.
Effect : Toussaint is regarded as a hero.
He's even seen as a hero to abolitionists and black people (Chicago defender was owned by black people) more than 100 years later
Maybe an Effect: People begin to say that Napoleon is a hypocrite.
You have to mention the legacy of Toussaint and the Haitian Revolution.
Haiti is seen as the greatest slave rebellion of all time
Toussaint is seen as a hero, a humble and effective governor and general.
Must mention: The civil war the "grand blancs" and the the "petite blancs" had.
IIn order to do this: you must mention the slave structure in St. Domingue
Paragraph Order:
Intro: How Many Years Were they in Slavery/Colonialism. Say it's regarded as the GOAT slave rebellion. Say it was the richest colony and France didn't want to let it go but somehow, St. Domingue pulled away and beat France (and other countries) in the war
Cause 1: Double Standards
Cause 2: Civil War gives slaves ability and motivation to free themselves
Toussaint L'Overture's great milittary acumen in defeating all those countries,- including Napoleon's army
