CV 5: Cardiac Cycle
Wiggers Diagram
Systole
Ventricular Ejection
Ventricular contraction causes pressure to go past aortic pressure
Blood flow to the aorta
Aortic and Pulmonary Valves open; AV valves closed
ST -T phase
Isovolumetric ventricular contraction
Ventricles generating force and contraction but no blood flow
Pressure is lower than aortic pressure but greater than atrial pressure
All valves are closed
RS phase
Equal volume
Diastole
Ventricular Filling
Ventricles relax until ventricular pressure drops below atrial pressure
70% blood flow in the ventricles
AV valves are open; Aortic and pulmonary valves are closed
Atrial kick -> 30% of blood flow in the ventricles
PQR phase
Isovolumetric Ventricular Relaxation
All valves are closed
Ventricles are relaxing; Pressure is below aortic pressure but greater than atrial pressure
Interval between T and P
Equal Volume
Blood flow is governed by pressure differences
