Gendered reversal in clothes by the end when Gallimard is wearing the kimono and Song is wearing the Armani suit

Bringing emotions into the mix, but not explicitly gendering

Definitions
Historical and Material
(18th Century) Orientalism can be discussed and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with it but making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, ruling over it" 3

Fu Manchu engages in violence and exacts his revenge, but it is still in a non-hands-on method

Racial Castration
"impossibility of thinking about racism and sexism as separate discourses or distinct spheres of analysis" (2)
Asian man in White Gaze (Freud, America)
"the Asian American man is both materially and psychically feminized within the context of a larger U.S. cultural imaginary" (2)
-
-
Race and Sexuality
white man creates a fetish-- a surrogate penis-- but with Gallimard he does not even see a penis when it is there
Intersectionality
"psychoanalytic, feminist, and queer theories traditionally have had the same conceptual blind spot: these are all critical discourses that emphasize sexual difference over and above every other type of social difference" (5)
-
"the indignities suffered by men of Chinese descent are analogous to those traditionally suffered by women" (16)

Leslie Bow Racist Cute
Racist objects

Example 2: the juicer that comes apart and the head is like a cup
Pointy hat, yellow color
-
Kawaii culture
Lolita Culture
A Japanese subculture where usually women dress cute; can be like a trauma response type thing where they intentionally try to look "cute" or childish to not be perverted
This is something that Bow doesn't really talk about, maybe bc it has to do less with objectification???

Audience

But when considering things like mammy cookie jars, we obv realize that is racist af
Im sorry but American cultural representation in other countries being called "coca-colonization" is actually kinda hilarious

This Bridge Called My Back (this one can't fit into one of my categories but it is racialized writing)
living document of writings from POC women that is 40 years old, the bridge is the relationship that POC women share through shared trauma
-
there is a whole slew of contributors that had horrible things happen to them, not limited to rape, domestic assault, homicide

"Also, in acknowledgement of all of those unnamed, we wish our sisters liberation in the wellspring of zero, we wish them life

a lot of these feel like they have radically different connotations; slave girl and yellow fever feel a lot more demeaning than China Doll in a weird way, but there is this objectification in all of them
-
eris?
the personification of strife, played by Joey Halter (who basically does not exist on the internet, sus)
with both the last doubler and starfish dead, the grist women face extinction
at their funeral, they get attacked
-
Japan & China both get she/her pronouns; characterization of the East. US/Western Nations get he pronouns
big overlap energy right here, i feel like animacies is almost all of my little categories
i feel like this also doesn't wholly fit into this category bc so far it's been this distinct experience and this dystopia is like different
She kinda has some overlap too because Leslie Bow is Asian-- I feel like this is important when thinking about like who wrote the piece
-
she also has big overlap energy with like gender and sexuality but I was naive when I made those distinctions and don't want to change it because it make brain go brr
the fact that the courtroom and the bedroom are mentioned in the same space is messed up, but i feel like it also brings in this power dynamic of how dominance in the courtroom is a similar dominance as would be present in the bedroom
this was, by far, one of the most horrifying things that I have watched in a really long time
like this disgusted me in a way that i have not been disgusted since i binge watched all 8 of the saw movies in one weekend
