How does the writer make this such a memorable scene in the novel?
listing of Babu's movements "unlocked, opened, entered, closed and locked" creates a sense of how quickly Babu was moving through the two spaces.
emphasises the precision of Babu's actions, giving the impression that a lot could go wrong if he doesn't do things correctly
creates a sense of anticipation in the reader, adding to the tense atmosphere.
Metaphor/ Stand-alone line. "A streak of black and orange flowed from one cage to the next."
'streak' and 'flow' connote the sense of speed that the tiger moved with.
climatic ending. Increases foreboding and tension in the reader as we know what will happen next.
Simile. "as if he was about to burst through the bars"
also emphasises how much effort Mahisha was putting into getting to the goat. Heightens the reader's sense of his power and danger
contrast with "slowly moving tail the only sign of tension"
reflective of the behaviour of a tiger in the wild
Stand-alone line. "I could feel Mother's hand pressed against my pounding heart"
'pounding' implies how scared Pi is and creates tension in scene
The line appearing as a single paragraph helps it stand out in the passage and emphasises Pi's fear.
"The goat started to jump. It jumped to amazing heights. I had no idea a goat could jump so high. But the back of the cage was a high and smooth cement wall."
This description emphasises the goat's desperation in the situation it has been put in
'no idea' implies that the goat's behavior was unusual, and further highlights the lengths it was going to to try to escape.
repetition of 'jump' emphasises the goat's desperation/ use of short sentences
conjuction 'but' tells the reader that there is no hope for the goat
reader is made to feel hopeful that the goat might escape, but that is abruptly cut short, thus making the goat's demise memorable.
Personification. "trapdoor resisted with sharp cries"
'resisted' implies that something bad is going to happen, and 'sharp cries' imply a sense of pain
gives the reader a sense of foreboding. Makes the movements seem intimidating
Short sentences. "We were in hysterics. She was incensed."
places emphasis on the shock and trauma felt by Pi and Ravi, and the anger that their mother felt that they had to see the goat being eaten
quick pace of the passage reflects Pi's fear - imitates a quickly-beating heart
maintains constant state of high tension for the reader.
structure. break in passage to give us background information reminds the reader that Pi's father orchestrated the situation, and that Mahisha was also being manipulated
readers are made to sympathise with the tiger, perhaps also encouraging them to dislike Santosh to a certain extent.
