Tannery waste in Greece
-
Tanning is the process of turning raw skins that do not decompose, when tanned, into a useful raw material.
Tanneries played a major role in the Greek economy of the past. There used to be tanneries in many cities and islands all over Greece. The neighbourhoods near tanneries were poor and dirty. Today, there are a few left.
The tanning waste is smelly and carries a large load of germs. They contain hairs, fats, blood and quantities of chemicals which are used for processing and dyeing and mainly the toxic sulfide ions of hexavalent chromium.
