Chapter 1º
Ashoka Chakra wheel is in the center of the Indian flag and symbolizes movement. India is in constant movement, changes and processes.
For centuries, India was divided into lots of small kingdoms each governed by its own ruler = political problems.
All of these rulers changed the face of India in some way, but only Chandragupta Maurya managed to unite the kingdoms of India into a single state.
When Chandragupta died, Bindusara, his son got the throne and ruled.
He devoted himself to expanding the lands of India and expanding the religion. He was considered one of the best emperors of India.
The Mauryan empire
This was a time of many achievements in the fields of engineering, the arts, science, technology, and religion.
Impressive temples were built. Archeological evidence shows that water conservation for irrigation was another important achievement of ancient India.

Fell when the last of the Mauryan rulers was assassinated. India experienced its Golden Age, with powerful rulers like Chandragupta I and II.

Colonial rule
1600
In Europe, tea and spices were in high demand.
India produced these so Queen Elizabeth I of england sent merchants to start a trading company in India, the British East India Company.

More than 100 years
The company traded mainly with India, buying cheap cotton cloth, silk, sugar, and spices, which they sold for a lot of money.
The Mughal Emperors
They allowed the British to build factories in Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta, and as more British merchants moved to live nearby, these areas became colonies.
