What do we already know about Reggio Emilia?
It's a region in Italy.
They use Pedological Documentation to record children's learning observations.
Photo's of children at work and play.
High quality, child centred approach.
Long term educational research.
Based upon strong relationships between both children and and adults and value parent involvement.
The four principles are; emergent curriculum, in depth projects, representational development and collaboration.
Parents in the wider community have collective responsibility of children.
Values, participation, collegiality (companionship and corporation between colleagues who share responsibility.
Role of the teacher:
Their primary role is to learn alongside children, becoming involved in group learning experiences as a guide and resource, they must carefully observe and track the group of children and take time to reflect on what they have learnt about themselves and their teaching.
Teachers plan lessons on each child's interest and ask children questions to further engage them.
Parents encourage to volunteer in the classroom and incorporate Reggio Emilia principles at home.
It ignites curiosity because lessons aren't 'planned'.
The classroom is seen as the third teacher. Much like the Montessori approach.
Great care is taken to construct an environment that allows for an easy exploration of various interests.
Role of the teacher: co-constructors (guides, nurtures). Researchers (learns, observes and re-visits).
Documenters (Listens, displays, records).
Advocates for children (involved in the community, politics relating to children).
Real items from the home, such as, table cloths, dishware etc, contribute to a comforting home like classroom. (Montessori)
Bruner is much appreciated within this International Perspective.
Involves reflective practitioners who value children as individuals, providing a high quality environment and understand different ways in which children development and learning.
