DL1 - Digital Literacy In Our Lives
Convenience
Examples:
Go-jek, Grab
Giant, Redmart, NTUC express
Paylah!/Paynow
Cons:
Impatience towards services
Online Shopping
Examples: Lazada, SHEIN, Taobao, Shopee, Ezbuy
Cheap alternatives to brick and mortar shops (on the downside, promoting fast fashion)
Delivered to your doorstep, no need to step out of the house
Shopping can be done on the go
Stable in times of crisis for example, COVID
Entertainment
Examples: Tiktok, Instagram, Youtube, Netflix, Twitter, Disney+
How has this changed us:
Ease to make international friends and see their life updates through their social media
Easy to find and consume content at anytime (can be replayed and saved to be watched offline)
Widespread information from different countries (politically, might end up being caught in a echochamber since you only consume content from one ‘side’)
Social media apps might be dangerous as people can find out personal information from what you post for example, your address (doxxing if you’re not careful)
Widespread advertising of certain products or brands (Disney, food, makeup) to boost sales of the brand. Additional videos made about the brand may boost or bring down reputation of item
How has Digital Literacy changed the way we do things?
All the DTs mentioned above help with making daily tasks easier and more convenient
We have become reliant on these DTs to help us everyday
Schedules are more flexible based on individual preferences - I can do my portion of a group project when I’m free
Increases productive communication
Pros and Cons of using DTs:
Pros: Bring convenience to our lives, help save time. Allows us to multitask, brings more variety in terms of entertainment. More simultaneous hands-on instead of a single person writing on paper. Blurs the boundaries between work and home. can maintain some level of communication with others
Cons: No human touch, over-reliance on digital tools that we will feel lost if there is no internet connection. More exposed to digital dangers such as online scams, phishing etc. On an individual level, it might affect our self-esteem due to comparison. Lose personal connections to others
Communication
Telegram, Zoom, Facetime
More convenient way to contact others around the clock
Free and accessible
Easier to spread news (might be fake)
May get scammed
More online interactions and less in person ones
Possible to interact with others from long distance
Pros:
Minimises human errors - no more brain maths and wrong change at the coffee shop :)
Get lazy
Can save some money and time
Chase for productivity and efficiency lifestyles
