Chemistry Hobbs 2
Lecture 7
Manipulation Equilibrium Constants
Lecture 8
Factors that Influence Thermal Equilibrium
Le Chatelier's Principal
When a chemical system at equilibrium is disturbed, it reattains equilibrium by undergoing a net reaction that reduces the effect of the disturbance
How to disturb a system
Change in product or reactant
Reactant Increases
The system will consume R and produce more Product
Product Increases
This will counteract the disturbance by converting P to R
Change in Pressure
We can change pressure in 3 ways
Changing concentration of the gaseous component
Adding an inert gas
Change the Volume of the reaction vessel
Change in Temperature
Increase Temp
rate of both processes increase
Rate of endothermic process increases more
Chemical Kinetics
the study of reaction rates
Types of Reaction Rates
Manometric
Gas Phase Products and Reactants
Monitor the change in pressure
Conductometric
Ionic Dissolution
the solution becomes conductive and we can monitor conductivity
How to measure the Rate of Reaction
Average Rate
The average rate will become smaller as the concentration of reactant decreases
Instantaneous Rate
Initial Rate
