OCG costumes
Ralph Clarke
Act1, scene 4 "The loneliness of men" - Ralph is writing in his journal before going to bed- in nightwear (he is a rigid formal man, therefore his jacket would be added when he is interrupted to highlight his wish for modesty.
Act1, scene 5 'The audition' - Ralph is auditioning the convicts - in proper uniform.
Night shirt- Linen (natural fabric) which was common in the 18th century as it was affordable and easy to come by.
strong and absorbent- suitable for Australia - doesn't need repairing- dries fast = good due to hot sweaty conditions.
it would be in okay conditions, wrinkled due to being worn often and due to linen creasing easily - brown undertone as it chant ne washed easily (armpits= yellowish)
shorts- same as nightgown (CONDITION WISE)
Jacket- would be placed on over his nightgown for modesty to illustrate his dis comfort or harry seeing him without proper uniform. (tells harry to keep his past to himself= he values privacy and doesn't want a close connection with other characters- professional divide)
Ralph would have a hat but it wouldn't be for in this scene- sat on the side.
The uniform would be made from wool and linen with brass buttons and gold trimmed lace. Red jacket crimson and uniform may be slightly dirty and wrinkled but not torn.
Breeches would've been worn, and would've been very suitable for hot Australian weather.
Black boots
Phillips costume
Navy blue coat with a gold trim, ivory breaches and waistcoat similar to Ralph, he would wear a white neck scarf and stockings. Wear black buckled shoes and a black bicorn hat.
Harry
Female convicts costumes
Often convicts wear what they were arrested wearing- women would be wearing dresses and corsets and maybe shauls.
Mary- wearing light blue- reflect innocence and wouldn't be wearing a corset or have her breasts out- she doesn't want other men looking at her- she's got a smallish frame and light hair- wear a light cotton mob cap- bio shoes- here white clothes would be grey with mud and would be holed and tattered fabrics. - dress may hang loose- weigh she's lost since being imprisoned.

Liz- big girls with confidence- in tight corsets with their chest out- dresses would be tattered and frayed and shorter than marts- not as private - all linen / cotton material- she's not upper class- has little money, her clothes would be much dirtier than Marys- less lady like.
duckling- Pinkish (brown from mud) fabric of good quality with white lace sleeves and bare foot to (may have brown shoes due to connections with harry) - her dress would be slightly too small for her- indicating teenage growth.
Dabby- Olive green colour of sturdy fabric- stitching would br frayed and bottom of dress been cut off- tied around her head like a headband. white apron and brown corset- 3/4 length cotton sleeves- rolled up and tattered- heat
Male convicts costumes
Wisehammer- dark/ reddish brown waistcoat with dark yellow breeches, plain white linen shirt- all distressed with holes- loose om him from weight loss and yellow marks in the armpits from what- collar yellow and riped- too hot to wear, batrefoot.
Sideway- French Revolution inspired shirt, buttoned up but loose, half tucked into convict slops (brown shorts) ripped from trousers into shorts- heat. very dirty and sweat ridden, buttons broken and trousers held up with string.
Hangman (ketch - James freeman)- oversized white shirt dirty and ripped- attacked for being the hangman- blood stains on it occasionally, brown slack knee length shorts that would be under his shirt (half tucked in) sleeves - 1 rolled one not. shoeless.
Smallpox- he has builds and blisters all over his face sfx and body- the 'shield' making on his chest is smudged from itching his body along with all his other tribal makings and paints- his home and him have been destroyed by these people- the colonialisation of it has destroyed his people.
holding a spear with a feather trim, wearing a brown cloth hat with shiny black hair in a neat plait down his back, bare footed and wearing only a brown cloth skirt covering only the front ands back, not the sides, would be in good condition but dusty/dirty from the land.
tribal markings - scarring across the chest- it is a language inscribed on the body, each deliberately placed scar tells a story of pain, endurance, identity, status, beauty, courage, sorrow or grief.
have the aboriginal marking for shield (long smiley face with no mouth and the eyes are 0's) across his chest- foreshadow how the aborigines couldn't defend their land.
blue jacket as he is a mid ranking officer- wearing the same as there other officers- keep his jacket and hat on everywhere but when he is with duckling- he can relax around her. black boots and white linen stockings.
