Introduction
Local self government means, an elected body enjoying a certain degree of autonomy and serving as an administrative unit for the local affairs. It is a democratic body.
The management is more effective
It gives a proper training to the people to work for the central or state government
The process is highly economical
There is less burden on the administrative system
Self government acts as a form of true democracy

Functions
Civic Facilities - provision of safe drinking water which includes cleaning and maintain tanks & wells, street lights, health care facilities, upkeep of roads & streets and good drainage
Welfare functions - arrangements for primary & secondary school, welfare programs for women, youth & children, welfare for expectant moms & their babies.
Development Functions - minor irrigation schemes, rural or small scale industries, rural electrification, vocational education & rural hosing
Regulatory & General Administrative functions - Registration of deaths, births & marriages, maintenance of watch guards, maintenance of common village properties and helping the government follow law & order
Judicial Functions - Nyaya panchayats are present to resolve issues regarding justice however they don't have any right to imprison instead they can fine up to Rs. 200. Advocates or lawyers are not allowed to interfere.
Majorly they earn money through taxes & revenues.

Panchayat samiti - Co ordinates the activities of all the village panchayats, 5 year term
Functions
Civic Facilities & Development Functions - Rural water suppl, roads & regulations of the market, Functions relating to husbandry, agriculture & fisheries, Development of cottage industries, social welfare, rural employment, and rural health program.
Supervisory Functions - It supervises the work of the Gram Panchayats, examines the budget & exercises control over the functioning of block development officer & his co - workers.
Delegated Functions - IRDP is a major program

Zila Parishad - Co ordinates activities of various panchayat samitis.
