'There is nothing... so hard as poverty" "You fear the world too much"
His fear of poverty drives him to greed, and shut out the one he loves.
Scrooge is desperate for the Spirit to take him away from the scene of seeing his old girlfriend, Belle. This shows fear because he says, 'Remove me! I cannot bear it!'
Stave 1
'Even Scrooge was not so dreadfully cut up by the sad event'
No fear is shown at the beginning when Dickens relates about Marley's death. He doesn't worry about what is going to become of him, just gets on with business.
'A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!'
Dickens' description of Scrooge
All the adverbs and adjectives tells the reader simply of what Scrooge is like
Brings fear to the reader, as we don't know this early in the book the sort of thing that Scrooge is going to do.
'A frosty rime on his head... and his wiry chin'
When Marley's ghost appears, Scrooge is shocked and fears what is going to become of him.
When he sees Marley's ghost on the door knocker
"To say that he was not startled or that his blood was not conscience of a terrible sensation
When the bell rings at 12
When Marley's ghost comes and visits him,
"Scrooge shivered and wiped the perspiration from his brow
"Solitary as an oyster"
- shows Scrooge's fear of emotions and shows his vulnerability.

When fear is show
In the opening of stave 3, Scrooge is anxiously and nervously awaiting the arrival of the Ghost of Christmas Present. He
'grows cold'
as he wonders where the spirit will appear and draws back all the curtains around his bed so that he will be able to see all around him as he
'did not wish to be taken by surprise'
.
When the bell stikes one o'clock and nothing/ nobody appears, Scrooge begins to tremble in fear as he wonders what will happen.
'Now, being prepared for almost anything, he was not by any means prepared for nothing'
Scrooge waits, sitting on his bed but is overcome with curiosity about where the blaze of light is coming from and decides to trace it to its source.
When Ignorance and Want come out from the ghost's cloak
Stave 4
Fear is presented as the last spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is presented to scrooge as a terrifying phantom
'It made him shudder, and feel very cold'
the phantom is described as being covered with a black cloak which covers its face and body and there is only a hand that shows and it cannot speak
Scrooge gets shown the gravestone with his name written on it. He fears that it is going to happen to him and has to change his ways
'Scrooge listened to this dialogue in horror.'
he is horrified as
"I fear you more than any other spectre I have seen"
and
fear the silent shape so much that his legs trembled"
