MissionTerminology
PDS
Mission
It should be noted that Missions are only one type of Investigation in the PDS 4 data model. A set of experiments and\/or observations with a clearly defined purpose that is under the direction of an organization (such as a national space agency) and uses one or more vehicles of similar design. A mission is usually conducted by a national or international space agency using a small number (often one) of spacecraft especially designed and built for the purpose. For example: (1) the NASA Voyager mission launched two spacecraft to Jupiter and Saturn; (2) the Deep Impact (DI) mission launched a spacecraft, part of which impacted the comet Tempel 2; and (3) the EPOXI mission redefined the objectives of the surviving DI hardware for further exploration of the solar system. Imaging Node
-
-
Data Portal
A mission discovery service. Takes you to mission landing pages, other search tools, archive volumes and a variety of documentation.
-
Geoscience Node
Mission Phase
Missions such as LCROSS often have well defined phases. These are time ranges where certain activities were happening.

Ring-Moon Systems Node
Mission
A controlled vocabulary of mostly spacecraft names. It should be noted that all of the ground-based items are the names of telescopes with their instruments. Options are:
- Cassini
- Galileo
- Hubble
- New Horizons
- Voyager
- Ground-based
Instrument Host Name
A controlled vocabulary of mostly spacecraft, with the exception of Ground-based which is again telescope and instrument combinations. Options are:
- Cassini
- Galileo
- Hubble
- New Horizons
- Voyager 1
- Voyager 2
- Ground-based

MAST
Portal
Mission
Only if MAST collections is selected. It should be noted that these options do not correspond to official NASA SMD mission names but seem to include various processing options and releases. Options are updated over time and as of 3/8/2022 are:
- Gaia (DR1)
- Gaia (DR2)
- Gaia (eDR3)
- Plato Input v1.1
- TGAS (DR1)
- TESS Input v8.2
- TESS CTL v8.01
