Book 1

Summary Book 1: Odysseus is one of the only Greeks to not return home from Troy. Odysseus is trapped on a remote island called Ogygia with the goddess Calypso who has fallen in love with Odysseus. Odysseus's infant child Telemachus, who is now grown-up, is dealing with suitors trying to take over his father's kingdom Ithaca. Athena tries to help Telemachus by disguising herself as one of Odysseus's friends, Mentes. Telemachus figures out that Mentes might be a goddess trying to help him. Athena tells Telemachus that his father Odysseus will return home. Athena then tells Telemachus to hold an assembly and tell all the suitors to leave his estate. Two suitors question Telemachas about who he was speaking to. Telemachus tells them that he was speaking with one of his father's old friends. Athena also told Telemachus to go get news of his father from Pylos and Sparta.

Summary Book 2: Telemachus calls a meeting with the suitors who are being very disrespectful. Telemachus tells the suitors that they are eating his inheritance away. The suitors laugh at him and mock him because they know that he can’t do anything to stop him. Athena gets the boat ready to leave for Pylos. Telemachus sneaks away at night not telling anyone besides one of the people at his household. Athena calls for Telemachus and they go to Pylos expecting to meet Nestor, an old wise king.
Book 3
Summary Book 3: In book 3 Telemachus meets Nestor and tells him that he needs news of his father Odysseus. Nestor tells him that his father fought bravely. He then tells Telemachus about what happened to Agamemnon. Nestor tells them that Agamemnon was killed by his own wife. Nestor then tells him that he does not know what happened to Odysseus. Nestor then tells Telemachus to take his son and a chariot to Sparta to meet with Helen and Menelaus to get more information about his father.

Book 4
Summary Book 4: In book 4 Telemachus arrives in Sparta and meets with Helen and Menelaus. They are celebrating their children's marriage. They invite Telemachus and Nestor's son to their children's marriage. Menelaus tells Telemachus about his journey back from Troy. Menelaus said that he got lost and had to strangle Proteus to get directions to land. Menelaus also told them about Agamemnon about his death. The suitors learn about Telemachus and his journey to find his father and they were planning to kill him and take over his inheritance and prevent him from finding Odysseus.

Summary Book 5: Athena and the god are in a meeting. Athena tells Zeus, her father and the rest of the gods to let Odysseus go because she thinks he has spent enough time. Zeus tells Hermes to go tell Calypso to let Odysseus go. Odysseus builds a boat on the island but when he goes on the water Poseidon is still mad at him so he throws some waves at him but he can't kill him. The sea nymph came to help Odysseus for no reason and gave him help to get to land. Athena also helped Odysseus by giving him thoughts to grab onto the rock so he doesn't crash into any cliffs or rocks.

Summary Book 6: Odysseus finally reached land after a hard and tough journey through the seas. He was put in Scheria where the Phaeacians lived. The princess of Scheria was sleeping with two of her slaves outside her door. Athena disguised herself as one of the princess Nausicaa's best friends, Dymas, daughter of a famous sailor. Athena told Nausicaa that she had dirty clothes laying on the floor and shamed her for it. So Nausicaa went to her father with her two slaves and asked if she could go wash her clothes at the river. Her father said yes and Nausciaa went on a wagon to the river. There with her two slaves went to go wash their clothes and play ball. Athena then thought it was the right time to wake Odysseus up. Athena thought that Nausicaa was kind enough to help Odysseus get back home by taking him back to her home. Athena then made the girls scream because of an incident where she lost her ball. Odysseus woke up and heard those screams and went to go check it out. He then came across the 3 girls. Odysseus then told the three girls his story and how he got there. The slaves ran away because Odysseus looked dirty but Athena gave courage in Naciscaa to ask Odysseus what he needed. Nausicaa then took Odysseus back home and while on the wagon she told Odysseus what to do in order to get back home.

Summary Book 7: On the way back to Nausicaa’s home. Nausicaa tells Odysseus what to do when they get home. Odysseus sees the king but is sure to not reveal his true identity. The king helps Odysseus get back home by lending him a ship. The king offers Odysseus his daughter’s hand because Athena has given Odysseus a very powerful look. Odysseus is offered wealth and power. But Odysseus declines his generous offer. Odysseus then stays the night at the palace.

Book 8
Summary Book 8: At the palace Athena is disguised as a royal messenger. The king Alcinous asks his people to bring a ship with 52 men to go with Odysseus back home to Ithaca. Odysseus calls for a feast. Everyone is enjoying themselves and Demodocus sings about the battle between Achilles and Odysseus. The song had Odysseus in tears. Alcinous saw that Odysseus was crying and told everybody to move onto sports or athletics. Laodamus urges Odysseus to join the competitions. But Odysseus didn't want to because he was tired. Then Laodamus mocks Odysseus and says he has no skill. His muscles are just for show. Odysseus took offense to that and threw a discus farther than anyone over there could shocking everyone. The bard told a story about Ares, the god of war. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and she was already married to a goldsmith Hephaestus. Aphrodite cheated on the goldsmith with Ares. Hephaestus found out about this and partnered up with the god of sun to help him embarrass Ares and Aphrodite. They made gold chains that and while they were sleeping they put the gold chains on them making them immobile. All the gods laughed at them. Poseidon asked Hephaestus to free Ares and he did as he asked.
