Disease and Infection - Key People
Pasteur
Industrial Revolution
Pasteur was a French scientist during the Franco-Prussian war, this lead to a rivalry with a Prussian scientist named Koch.
Utilising a swan neck flask Pasteur discovered germs and how they infected things, rather than the previous theory of Spontaneous Generation, he did this whilst trying to find why alcohol soured
This spurred Koch to further research this and then lead to his own discoveries as well as paving the future for microbiology.
Ehrlich
20th Century
Ehrlich was fascinated by antibodies thinking of them as magic bullets to cure illnesses, this was amplified by seeing how the body produced them when it was ill leading to recoveries.
Ehrlich decided to create his own "magic bullet" making it using arson, it was able to treat syphilis but due to it help prostitutes many weren't fans.
He pathed the way for other "magic bullets" to be created such as Florey and Chain.
Koch
Industrial Revolution
Koch was a Prussian scientist during the Franco-Prussian war, this lead to a rivalry with a French scientist named Pasteur.
Furthering Pasteur's germ theory Koch used different coloured dyes to highlight bacteria under a microscope and from this and other test proved that different bacteria caused different diseases.
This lead in our modern day to targeted treatments to rid certain germs and microbes from us.
Jenner
Timer Period: Industrial Revolution
Who were they?: Edward Jenner was a family doctor in the countryside who discovered the horror of smallpox at a young age.
Jenner discovered how vaccines can be used, specifically how cowpox could be used to prevent smallpox.
His importance at the time was limited but still helpful, people didn't understand how it worked so many we sceptical.
Jenner's legacy lead to that such as Pasteur's work as well as saving millions if not billions of lives.
