Macbeth
Power
-
Act 1
'We will proceed no further'- shows that MB still has morals (he refuses to kill Duncan) and power over his wife (he uses the definitive verb will not might this shows he has made up his mind and will not be challenged. However LB then manipulates him into giving in.
' For brave Macbeth..' MB's violent nature makes him be hailed a hero, it is only when he starts killing people without orders from the king that people's opinion of him start to change
Act 3
'To be thus is nothing but to be safely thus' - This shows that MB's priorities have shifted from gaining power, to eliminating any competition or threats to his throne
'Mine eternal jewel.../ given to the common enemy of man' - this means that MB now believes that his soul is condemmed to being tortured by satan (reflects inward torture?). This would be the ultimate price to pay as a christian and might lead to MB thinking he has nothing left to lose and becoming more erratic and dangerous
-
Act 4
wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls.../That trace him in his line’ this shows that Macbeth is willing to stop at nothing and kill anyone to retain power and the word babes makes the children sound even more helpless and vunerable to Mb
-
Natural Order
Act 3
'We've scorched the snake not killed it' - This shows LB doesnt believe that she has put the matter of the throne to rest and there may be more enemies that need dealing with before she can be happy. This shows the same never satisfied ambition that her husband has. It also shows that upsetting the natural order will have consequences and is out of the control of MB
-
-
Scene 5
'What's he/ that was not born of woman?'- This makes him believe that nobody can kill him and he is therefore invincible and almost god-like
Act 1
'If chance will have me King, why then chance will crown me without my stir'
- This shows MB's acceptance and awareness of the natural order and he has decided he will not interfere
'So fair and foul a day I have not seen' - MB's first line shows the power the witches have over the weather.
'And make my unseated heart knock against my ribs ..../ against the use of nature' At this point MB is reluctant to harm Duncan as he knows that it is a cardinal sin and against the natural order and therfore god's will who he is very scared of
Mind
Act 1
'Stars hide your fires , let not light see my black and deep desires' - Admitting he wants the crown even though he knows it is wrong and fears the consequences eg. hell if he carries it out.
'If good, why do I yield to that suggestion?'
- MB realises he is a traitor not the loyal man he is thought of
'And make my seated heart knock at my ribs'
- shows he is scared at the thought of killing Duncan
'Vaulting ambition which o'erleaps itself and falls on the other'
- He realises his only motivation is ambition and recognises that great ambition leads to negative consequences.
Act 2
'A dagger of the mind, a false creation' This could show his inward and mental pain from Duncan's murder, or how he can't tell what is real or not (murder dagger real, this one too?)
-
Act 3
'You hast it all now - King, Cawdor and Glamis. I fear thou play'd most foully for't' - Banquo is scared and suspicious of Macbeth's power and how he got it.
-
Sleep
Act 3
-
You lack the season of all natures, sleep' (LB-MB)
Act 5
'More she needs the divine rather than a physician' - Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking is punishment for her sins - possessed by evil spirits?
'do breed unnatural troubles; infected minds' - this idea of infection continues from the witches who were said to cause infection and sickness and their prophecy seems to have infected both MB and LB's minds.
-
Blood
Act 1
He unseamed him from the nave to the chaps' MB is very used to seeing blood on the battlefield with very little moral questioning.
Act 2
'Sorry sight' - MB seems ashamed of Duncan's blood on his hands. This shows his discomfort over him killing people and from now on he makes an effort for other people to do his dirty work up until the last act where any supporters seem to have disappear.
'Will all of great Neptune's ocean wash away this blood?' This shows that the guilt (symbolised by the blood) is infinite to him.

Gender
Femininity
Act 4
wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls.../That trace him in his line’ - this shows that Macbeth is willing to stop at nothing and kill anyone to retain power and the word babes makes the children sound even more helpless and vunerable
Act 5
'Macduff was from his mother's womb.. untimely ripped ' - the violent word ripped shows the horror of this realisation to Macbeth
Act 1
'Come to my woman's breasts and take my milk for gall' - she rejects the typical feminine and womanly traits eg. kindness and asks instead for the 'manly' traits to kill Duncan
LB would rather brutally murder her own child (rejecting the 'womanly' part of herself) rather than break a promise to her husband.
'Great Glamis, Worthy Cawdor' LB flatters her husband using his titles, appealing to his ego and ambition and then dominates their conversation, showing she is the strongest in the relationship.
Masculinity
-
Act 1
'My dearest love,.. ' MB talks to his wife lovingly and shares his ordeal with the witches with her this shows a level of trust in the relationship and almost treats her like an equal
'Valour's minion / Bellona's bridegroom' - shows he is equal to and favoured by gods because of his bravery and nobility. Both seen as masculine at the time
-
Act 3
'Be innocent of the knowledge my dear chuck' - maybe Mb doesnt want her to suffer the same mental anguish he has (my mind is full of scorpions my dear wife) or is paranoid and doesnt want anyone to know about his plot. He seems to be in control of his own actions here
-
LB's Manipulations
Act 1
'Too full of the milk of human kindness' - metaphor to show MB is a good man but meant as an insult. To LB kindness is a weakness and usually female trait (she asks for her female trait
'Screw your courage to the sticking place and we will not fail' - Macbeth is torn whether to kill the king, LB tries to reassure him and manipulate him into doing the deed. This shows she has power over him.
Act 3
'Are you a man?'
- Lb is questioning his sanity and humanity after his halucination of Banquo's ghost.
- she also questions his masculinity using the common sterotype that a weak man is not a man but a boy. this makes him feel weak and vunerable and that he needs to prove his bravery and therefore masculinity to his wife.
- People used to see mental illness as a female problem
