SALT SATYAGRAHA AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE.
-Salt only gave the RAJ 4% of its revenue
-Cost Indians on average 3 Annas a year
-Every Indian needed it from the richest to the poorest.
-Yet the Raj controlled production and taxed it.
The Civil Disobedience gained more traction when Gandhi was sent to prison.
-Congress gave pronvincial committees the ability to organise their own Satyagrahas.
-This made it harder for the Raj as there was no central organisation to take out.
-Midnapore Salt Satyagraha was followed by attacks on Police.
-In united province a peasant anti-land-tax was successful
-Bombay was a no go area for the police.
-Students to middle class businessmen became involved. (women in particular became involved). By Nov 1930 360 women were in jail.
-
By 1931 the Raj restored Law and Order.
In 1930 60,000 Indians had passed through the prisons which put a stress on the authorities and caused overcrowding in prisons.
At the end of 1930 there was still 29,000 people in Indias Jails including 300 Women and and 2,000 Youth.
-Viceroy had considered implementing martial law on the disaffected regions, but did not do so because of Amritsar.
-However, this paid off as Congress ran out of steam as local satyagraha could not be sustained.
-Furthermore an economic upturn made people anxious to return to work.
12th March 1930 Gandhi left his house and aimed to walk 240 miles to the Gujarat coast.
-He was accompanied by 78 supporters, some untouchables.
-After a prayer meeting held before the day attracted 10,000 people.
-And a gathering on the day of the march attracted 75,000 people
-For the 78 it was going to be like a pilgrimage: keeping a diary and pray in a peaceful manner.
-They were followed by a posse of reporters and a cameraman from the world's press.
-When Gandhi got to the sea he picked up the salt and said it was tax free, he encouraged other Indians to do the same.
-100s of peasants were imprisoned.
-Gandhi and Nehru were arrested.
-The whole congress working comittee was arrested.
