WHAT IS IT?
" This assessment measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems.
The key feature is that it requires the student to produce something

Since it's more about how the assessment is delivered, this can be used as

Performance Task
A long-term (days, weeks, months), multi-step response that may even involve several different prompts. "Embedded in the task may be written-response items, presentations, papers, student self-reflection, and so forth."

What is it?
Briefly put, AFL is a method of ongoing assessment before and throughout learning that allows a student immediate feedback on work they are currently engaged in and allows teachers to pre-assess and concept check in real-time so that the lesson can be adapted and evolve based on students needs.
It can be used to identify a lack of knowledge and allow teachers to adjust future lessons to student needs.

This is the idea that through the completion of an assessment, students are able to learn something new. It is very often used interchangeably with AFL as formative assessments, peer assessments and self-assessments are used to achieve this. Teachers are often able to have AFL and AAL occurring with these assessments simultaneously. These types of assessments also attempt to get students thinking about themselves as learners. Where their strengths lie and what they need to work on.

Assessment of learning is a well established and researched topic. This is because it's what we have been doing since modern education began. It's summative assessment to gauge what a student has learned at the end of a unit, term, semester or academic year.

WHY IS IT USED?
Allows teachers to adapt instruction based on results, making modifications and improvements that will produce immediate benefits for students’ learning.
Gives students evidence and feedback on their progress and motivates them to manage and adjust their own learning. Enables students to track their educational goals.
By understanding exactly what the students know before and during instruction, educators have much more power to improve student mastery of the subject matter than if they find out after a lesson or the unit is finished.
The strengths of formative assessment lie in the ongoing and feedback aspects. There is no end of formative assessment. Some can be big, some can be small but all must be continuous. In addition, formative assessment without feedback is like a car without a road. It serves no purpose. Moreover, feedback should be actionable and constructive. The students should know exactly what to do with the feedback and how they can move forward and improve.

Defined learning goals - monitoring student progress regularly helps keep learning goals focused, so students have a clear target to work towards and teachers can help clear up misunderstandings before students get off track
Increased rigour - formative assessment helps teachers collect quality information that indicates student needs. Once teachers have an understanding of what students need to be successful, they can create a rigorous and well-thought of learning environment that will challenge every student to grow
Improved academic achievement - Providing students and teachers with regular feedback on progress toward their goals is the main function of formative assessment that will aid in increasing academic achievement. Formative assessment helps students close the gap between their current knowledge and their learning goals.
Enhanced student motivation - Because formative assessment involves setting learning goals and measuring the progress towards those goals, motivation increases. When students have a focus on where they’re aiming, results skyrocket.
Increased student engagement - Students need to find meaning in the work they are asked to do in the classroom. Connecting the learning objectives with real-world problems and situations draws students into the instructional activities and feeds their natural curiosity about the world.
Focused and targeted feedback - Descriptive feedback should highlight gaps in understanding and specifically inform students on how they can improve their learning rather than listing what they got wrong, thus facilitating a reciprocal learning process between teachers and students
Personalised learning experience - A close analysis of formative assessment data allows the teacher to examine their instructional practices in order to determine which are producing the desired results and which are not. Some that work for one group of students may not work for another group.
Self-regulated learners - Teaching students the requisite skills to monitor and take responsibility for meeting their goals creates self-regulated learners. Give students examples of high-quality work along with multiple opportunities to review and correct their own work to build independent and autonomous thinkers.
Evidence-based decisions - Using the data gathered from frequent learning checks empowers teachers to make sound, informed decisions that are grounded in data.

Summative assessment provides an essential benchmark to check the progress of students, institutions and the educational program of the county, district, state, country as a whole.
Assess cumulative student learning.
When done with care and consideration, they can be strong indicators of content mastery in a particular area
Helps teachers and schools gauge effectiveness of teaching methods from year to year.
Helps determine strengths and weaknesses of a given curriculum.

Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period - typically at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year.
Generally speaking, summative assessments are defined by 3 major criteria
Summative assessments are given at the conclusion of a specific instructional period, and they evaluate learning.
The tests, assignments or projects are used to determine whether students have learned what they were expected to learn. In other words, what makes an assessment “summative” is not the design of the test, assignment, or self-evaluation, but the way it is used. In theory, a quiz designed for formative assessment could also be summative assessment.
They will result in scores or grades that are factored into a student’s permanent academic record. Not all summative assessments are graded, but generally speaking, most are.

This assessment informs educators of the learners' prior knowledge. Teachers can gauge where students are at and get a better grasp of how to take them where they are going. A diagnostic assessment can ensure that a lesson is well-delivered in a meaningful manner.

A simple technique that can be used at the beginning of a new unit or chapter. The instructor identifies key concepts and terms from the upcoming study and displays them preferably in a fun way on the board. Learners then brainstorm to make statements and connections with the words. They are also asked to predict how the words relate to the main topic.

Course curricula and textbooks often offer their own commercial diagnostic assessments. Teachers may also design their own when necessary.
K = know W = want to Know L = learned, as a form of diagnostic assessment the instructor could complete the first two columns of the KWL chart with the students before undertaking the study.

This type of assessment is used prior to beginning a course of study. It aims to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, knowledge level and skills set that learners already possess.

CRITERION-REFERENCED

This is a type of assessment which checks the learners' abilities against a pre-determined set of criteria. It is used to evaluate the learners' progress in relation to goals, objectives and standards at each stage of a curriculum.

NORM-REFERENCED
Similar in content to a criterion-reference assessment. However, the difference is in the scoring. Norm-referenced assessments rate students against other students in a similar population. A student's score can be affected by the performance of other students.

Norm-referenced assessments place the student at a percentile among a norm group. Usually on a large scale like nationally at the same grade level but the norm group can be narrowed for ELL learners, race, socioeconomic status or other characteristics.
