        Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students' knowledge, understanding and skills to inform their teaching. Sometimes referred to as ‘formative assessment', it usually occurs throughout the teaching and learning process to clarify student learning and understanding.

    - - We use it because reflects a view of learning in which assessment helps students learn better, rather than just achieve a better mark, is inclusive of all learners, involves formal and informal assessment activities as part of learning, involves teachers, students and parents reflecting on evidence, and to inform the planning of future learning.
    - - Some examples include: Formative assessments, which may be formal or informal, include homework,
        quizzes, exit cards, journal prompts, and classroom discussions.
        
        Frequent progress monitoring is an example of assessments for learning, where a student's academic performance is regularly assessed between benchmarks to determine if the current instruction and intervention is positively impacting student achievement or if adjustments need to be implemented.

        Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for new learning.
    - - WHY DO WE USE IT?
        We use it because encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning, involves teachers and students creating learning goals to encourage growth and development, and provides ways for students to use formal and informal feedback and self-assessment to help them understand the next steps in learning.

    - - Assessment as learning actively involves students in the learning process. It teaches critical thinking skills, problem-solving and encourages students to set achievable goals for themselves and objectively measure their progress.         Well-designed assessment methods provide valuable information about student learning. They tell us what students learned, how well they learned it, and where they struggled.
